Abstract

This paper focuses on the characteristics of the participants of a senior citizens nutrition and activities program in order to examine whether the program effectively promotes good health and well-being. The participants were 306 persons who received their meals at home and 766 who attended the programs at the congregate sites. Using a series of crosstabular analyses, persons from the two meal sites were compared with regard to: (a) background factors, (b) interpersonal relationships and emotional closeness in relationships, (c) health and economic condition, (d) emotional condition, especially loneliness, and (e) activities and nutrition program involvement. The results, though they indicate some basic differences in the persons in the two meal sites, show that the main purposes of the nutritional and activities program are being met.
