Abstract

This article aims to present the way in which the legal categories of “refugees” and “displaced persons” arise from the interest of the international community to control unwanted migration. In order to do so, an analytical argument is used based on the global system of migration proposed by Vidal (2005), in which the categories of forced migration, refugee and forced displacement are related. The article also tries to show that the category of refugee impacts in a restrictive way the interests of forced migrants, including displaced persons.
