Abstract

Unfortunately, child abuse is common in our society. In order to protect children, nurses must be knowledgeable about identifying, reporting and documenting suspected child abuse. Research has shown that education increases not only the provider's ability to recognize the signs and symptoms of child abuse, but also their likelihood of reporting suspicions. Initial and ongoing education for nursing staff is essential for building a sound understanding of this topic. Nurses who are knowledgeable can protect children who have been abused or neglected from further victimization.
