Abstract

This article considers the perception of people who self harm by nurses. 'Self-harm' is commonly known as self-inflicting harm, and this discussion includes a basic introduction to self-harm, and recommendations for interventions that can mitigate the stigmatization of self-harmers entering the health system. It is evident from the literature that many nurses require further information and training on self-harm, largely because self-harmers do not fit with the everyday norms of society. Other conditions, such as eating disorders, are better understood, and while there is stigma, this is less than that levelled against self-harmers.
