Abstract

Homicide is a major cause of death among persons aged < or = 18 years in the United States; among black males aged 15-24 years, homicide is the leading cause of death. Most efforts to characterize homicide among persons aged < or = 18 years have used databases at the national level rather than at the state or local level or have been restricted in scope to specific types of homicides (e.g., gang-related homicide. This report summarizes an epidemiologic study of homicides that occurred among persons aged < or = 18 years in Fulton County (Atlanta), Georgia (1990 population: 648,951), from 1988 through 1992.
