Abstract

Driver behavior was investigated in an expressway experiment in which four subjects were requested to follow a lead vehicle while driving as usual. It was found that the subjects followed a similar pattern, based on multiple objectives, in making decisions with regard to driving behaviors. The behaviors were mainly determined by information directly related to the car-following task. Relative speed was regarded as more important than headway distance. It was also found that the subjects intentionally relaxed control of headway distance to avoid an increase in workload and a decrease of riding comfort.
