Abstract

It is generally difficult for a driver to recover alertness rapidly once he or she has already become drowsy. Therefore, it is important to keep the driver's alertness at a safe level using an external means of stimulation. The author selected scent out of many different possible means of stimulation, including sound and vibration, etc. It was found that the most effective way to maintain alertness was to release scent for a period of 1min, at intervals fluctuating between 5 and 9min.
