Abstract

The objective of this study was to investigate the variation of road traffic crashes (RTCs) among drivers and passengers between 2005 and 2007 on the rural roads of the city of Mahan in Kerman province of south-east Iran. The data for road traffic accidents were collected from the Kerman police. Statistical analysis of the data was performed using SPSS software (for Windows 2004).The finding of this study shows that the highest rate of RTC fatality was 36%, which comprises the male drivers within the age groups 26-34 which had graduated from high school. This study shows that 70% of RTCs occurred during the day. This investigation shows that despite reduction of RTC fatalities in Mahan in 2007, it is still one of the highest in the world. Analysis of the data reported a definite trend of significantly higher accident rates for male drivers and passengers than their female counterparts.
