Abstract

This study examined the formal appraisal of the performance of law enforcement patrol personnel, based on a survey of all local law enforcement agencies in Florida with over 50 sworn personnel; 76 of the 116 agencies identified responded. The contents and administration of the appraisal instruments are reviewed in this article, as are the types of instruments employed and ways the appraisal information was used by the responding agencies. The effects that the law enforcement accreditation process has had on appraisal practices are summarized. The study concluded that the accreditation process has had beneficial effects on appraisal of the performance of patrol personnel but that performance appraisal in law enforcement continues to be as confused as performance appraisal in general.
