Abstract

At present there are only few reliable data about psychomotor ability and driving performance of persons under anti-depressive therapy. Existing study findings about psychomotor performance of healthy volunteers and depressive patients under medication with selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRI) and tricyclic antidepressants (TCA) are collected and judged critically. According to the actual data SSRIs -- in contrast to many TCAs -- do not significantly impair cognitive and psychomotor function. TCAs themselves, irrespective of illness-related influences, probably impair driving performance whereas SSRIs can be judged as harmless in this respect at the actual state of knowledge.
