Abstract

Current knowledge about suicide in the inmates of jails and prisons is revieved. The strategies for preventing inmate suicide, including screening for suicidality, suicide-proofing the institution and establishing sound organisational policies and procedures, are examined. Alternatives to incarceration are also urged for those inmates who might fit well into non-custodial settings.
