Abstract

In January 1982, California's new more stringent driving-under-the-influence (DUI) laws went into effect. There is some preliminary evidence that these laws resulted in a decline in the incidence of alcohol involved driving. This paper provides some perspective on California's accident statistics and suggests that further analyses be conducted so that a better explanation can be developed for the inability of the DUI laws to affect more substantively the alcohol and driving problems in California.
