Abstract

This editorial serves as an introduction to a special issue examining the relationship between distraction and driving performance. All of the papers in this issue are related to the now completed European project HASTE (Human Machine Interface and the Safety of Traffic in Europe). HASTE was aimed at developing methodologies and guidelines for the safety assessment of in-vehicle information systems (IVISs). The six papers and concluding chapter presented here are based on the first set of experiments conducted for the project, in which distraction was artificially stimulated with two surrogate IVISs, one visual and one cognitive, and the effects of that distraction on driving performance was assessed.
