Abstract

More and more European countries are adopting strategic approaches to reducing death and injury in road accidents by adapting the roads and the vehicle fleets and by influencing road user behavior. The current road safety strategy for Great Britain was launched in 2000 with casualty reduction targets for 2010 as its focus. Much progress has been made and the targets seem within reach, but challenges are emerging for beyond 2010. The 27 varied countries of the European Union have risks of death while using the roads that are disproportionately higher than those elsewhere in everyday life and are learning together how best to reduce it.
