Abstract

Psychiatric hospitals have orderlies on staff who are charged with containing patient violence. At general hospitals, however, violence in the psychiatric unit frequently requires response by the nursing staff in the unit and/or the security department. The potential for liability in such situations, based on the way the hospital deals with them, is great. This article provides a number of approaches to protect patients, staff and the institution.
