Abstract

Abuse and neglect of elderly persons, particularly by adult family members, is a serious social and health phenomenon that cannot be ignored. Physical therapists who deal with elderly persons must prepare themselves to recognize signs of abuse and neglect and to become familiar with existing intervention agencies and outlets for prevention. Awareness that the problem exists and improved detection and intervention procedures are needed to prevent abuse and neglect of elderly persons from becoming more widespread.
