Abstract

An investigation of family histories of bipolar affective disorder patients with and without an additional diagnosis of alcoholism showed that affective disorder was seen with equal frequency in both populations of relatives. Alcoholism was significantly more prevalent in relatives of the alcoholic probands than in the relatives of those who did not themselves have alcoholism. These data suggest that bipolar affective disorder and alcoholism may be transmitted independent of one another.
