Abstract

A bucket elevator leg used to vertically convey grain was analyzed using fault tree analysis (FTA) to determine the probability of a secondary grain dust explosion. Critical components and practices were identified, as well as their interrelationships, after site tours and interviews with 16 Oklahoma country elevators. The model identified the parameters which contribute significantly to the possibility of a secondary explosion. The probability of failure was estimated for an unequipped leg and for the addition of bearing heat sensors, explosion vents, and explosion suppression devices.
