TY - JOUR PY - 2004// TI - Adolescents, violence, and incivilities: Exploratory study in a sample of students at a French school ;; Les adolescents, la violence et les incivilités : Étude exploratoire dans un échantillon de collégiens et de lycéens français JO - Bulletin de psychologie A1 - Mokounkolo, René SP - 171 EP - 180 VL - 57 IS - 2 N2 - Studied attitudes toward violence and incivility in 212 male and female adolescents (aged 14-17 yrs) (secondary school students) in France. Data on sociodemographic variables and attitudes toward violence and incivility were obtained by questionnaire. The Attitudes toward Violence Scale for Adolescents (J. Funk et al, 1999) and the Schwartz Values Scale (P. Bréchon, 2000) were used, as were factorial analysis and other statistical tests. Two dimensions of attitude toward violence were identified: culture of violence and reactive violence. Two dimensions of attitude toward incivility were identified: incivility toward others and incivility toward self. The results indicate that incivility toward others is associated with gender, social class traditionalism, and security; and incivility toward self is correlated with social class, age, membership in a gang, gender, conformity, and traditionalism. The results also suggest that membership in a gang and security are significant predictors of a culture of violence; security and traditionalism are significant predictors of incivility toward others; and conformity, traditionalism, and membership in a gang are significant predictors of incivility toward self. Implications for the further study of attitudes toward violence among French adolescents, particularly concerning gang membership, are discussed.
