TY - JOUR PY - 1991// TI - Parasuicidal behaviour in an emergency room population JO - Nordisk Psykiatrisk Tidsskrift A1 - Pàlsson, Sigurdur P. A1 - Jónsdóttir, Gudrún A1 - Pétursson, Hannes SP - 351 EP - 356 VL - 45 IS - 5 N2 - Compared characteristics of individuals who showed evidence of parasuicidal behavior (PB) with those of people who attended a psychiatric emergency clinic for other reasons. There were 145 male and 212 female PB patients and 510 male and 582 female other patients. Most PB Ss had a history of previous substance abuse, the most common being alcohol and prescription drugs. Acute stress reaction and adjustment reaction predominated in PB Ss. Neurotic depression, alcoholism, and nondependent substance abuse were more frequently associated with PB attempts, but the major psychoses, schizophrenia and affective disorders, were more frequent among Ss that attended for other reasons. The PB Ss were often alcoholics or depressives, and females dominated the PB group, which tended to be relatively younger (aged 15-40 yrs).
