N2  - This study investigated predictive risk of suicide attempts in individuals with panic disorder. Subjects were 546 relatives of anxiety clinic patients and 301 acquaintances of those relatives. Compared to subjects with no mental disorder, subjects with panic disorder (PD) were ten times more likely to attempt suicide (11% vs. 1%, p <.01), and subjects with spontaneous panic attacks but no panic disorder (PA) were five times more likely to attempt suicide (6% vs 1%, p <.06). However, in five of the seven PD/PA attempters, the suicide attempt preceded onset of PD/PA, usually by several years; and in six of these seven attempters, the attempt was made during an episode of a mood or substance use disorder. Rate of attempters among PD cases was comparable to the rates found among subjects with a variety of other lifetime anxiety, mood, and substance use disorders. There was a significant relationship between number of mental disorders and suicide attempts. © 1992.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
