N2  - The resilience perspective is used to examine the risk and protective mechanisms associated with adolescent substance use. First, resilience is defined within an ecological framework of development. Second, resilience processes related to substance use are explored. To ensure the most current review of the literature, the focus is placed on published studies of the past decade. We also discuss recommendations for further descriptive and analytic research. Finally, effective adolescent substance use prevention programs that promote youth resilience are reviewed. Directions for future efforts in program development also are provided.<p />
