SP - EP - VL - 18 IS - 1 N2 - The denial of subjectivity resulting from inequalities provokes in the young students' feelings of existential emptiness that can lead to acts of violence against themselves. The phenomena of physical self-injury and suicide are expressions of a social pain that cannot be channeled through other channels. This paper presents a series of results of a socio-educational research whose purpose is to understand the social construction of emotions in school life and its relationships with the production of violence. Based on in-depth interviews, the student perspective is interpreted in order to identify and characterize the problems related to the practices of suicide and self-harm. By increasing the recurrence among the young population and going through the school plot, these phenomena begin to occupy a prominent place in the public policy agenda and in the elaboration of strategies aimed at socio-educational intervention. © 2019 Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Valparaiso.
