The gradual development of laws for railroad safety improvement began in the late nineteenth century, with legislation often occurring after accidents involving trains. A brief history of railroad-related landmarks, beginning with George Westinghouse's 1869 invention of the air brake, is given. Selected [U.S.A.] Transportation Security Administration and Federal Railroad Administration activities are discussed.
