TY - JOUR PY - 2018// TI - Risk of suicide in the military: A narrative review JO - Neurologia, Neurocirugia y Psiquiatria A1 - Ocampo-Ortega, R. SP - 88 EP - 94 VL - 46 IS - 3 N2 - Suicide represents the sixteenth cause of death worldwide and the tenth in the North American civilian population, with an increase of 17% in the incidence of suicide attempts in the last 10 years. Until a few years ago, the suicide rate in the US military has been below the civilian population, however since 2008 the suicide rate in US soldiers began to exceed the civilian population and in certain years (2010 and 2011) the suicide mortality rate exceeded the mortality due to combat or accidents, particularly in the members of the army and in the infantry, whose frequency of suicidal behavior has doubled. Therefore, the importance of studying and understanding the risk factors associated with suicide risk in the military is considered in order to be able to design studies and specific prevention programs. © 2018 Sociedad Mexicana de Neurologia y Psiquiatria.
