TY - JOUR PY - 2007// TI - 3-D Motion Estimation Using Range Data JO - IEEE transactions on intelligent transportation systems A1 - Gharavi, H A1 - Gao, Shangkai SP - 133 EP - 143 VL - 8 IS - 1 N2 - This article describes research into improvements in object tracking and velocity estimations for intelligent transportation vehicles through the use of laser scanners that generate a three-dimensional (3-D) representation to the vehicles safety and warning systems. Aside from laser scanners, radar and stereo are used alongside cameras to generate road geometry, or the curvature and position of the road surface, for systems using 3-D. Such systems can either warn drivers of impending dangers or, if more immediacy is required, activate safety devices such as air bags, brakes, or emergency steering procedures. Results of experimentation are explained and researchers conclude that their 3-D moving-range images are accurately represented through the recursive strategy they employ. Range images are also demonstrated to be converted to a form suitable for a nonrectangular grid.
