TY - JOUR PY - 2016// TI - Profile of alleged dowry death cases in Rajkot region JO - Journal of South India Medicolegal Association A1 - Modi, P.M. A1 - Varu, P.R. A1 - Mangal, H.M. A1 - Kyada, H.C. A1 - Vadgama, D.K. A1 - Mashru, R.K. SP - 68 EP - 72 VL - 8 IS - 2 N2 - In the early days, dowry was an institution in which gifts and presents were given to a girl at the time of her marriage. But, in course of time, it became a crude institution resulting in female infanticide, suicide, bride-burning and other indignities and cruelties. In the present study, we have tried to find out various factors responsible for higher incidence of dowry death in our society. We have studied 131 cases of alleged dowry death whose autopsies were conducted at Govt. Hospital, Rajkot in the year 2013. Maximum incidences of alleged dowry death were found in age group of 25 to 30 years, during first three years of marriage, among victims with lower educational status, among victims where occupation of their husband was labour. Commonest cause of death was poisoning, followed by burns. Based on findings of our study, we have formulated suggestions to responsible authorities to curtail incidences of dowry death. © 2016 South India Medico-Legal Association. All rights reserved.
