N2  - In this article, Winnicott's concept of breakdown is discussed in relation to Freud's ideas of "actual neurosis." This provides the theoretical underpinning for understanding of severe depression. The case of a severely depressed woman illustrates how the deadened core of the depression is not communicable to an object.
