N2  - INTRODUCTION: The number of suicides in Japan has increased rapidly, with over 30,000 in 1998 and over 30,000 in 2010. We have studied potential indicators of suicide trends in detail to decrease of suicides. <br><br>MATERIALS AND METHODS: We researched the annual suicide rates and the number of new housing starts, and we discuss whether the number of new housing starts is an indicator of suicide trends. <br><br>RESULTS: From 1974-1988, there was no significant relationship between the number of new housing starts and suicide rates for either men or women. From 1994-2008, however, this relationship was significant for both men and women. <br><br>CONCLUSION: Based on these results, the number of new housing starts may serve as an indicator of recent suicide trends for both men and women. © 2012 Japan International Cultural Exchange Foundation and Japan Health Sciences University.<p /> <p>Language: en</p>
