The present study was realized to demonstrate benefits given by occupational therapy to bed-ridden patients in Psychiatrist Section at Central Militar Hospital. Material and methods. In an observational and retrospective study, we evaluated a total of 50 patients, applying diverse instruments. Female and male, any age and any mental disease patients were included, participating in occupational therapy activities and accepting to be interviewed. Patients with psychotic episode, suicide idea or whose information were not reliable. 300 questionnaires were applied and a descriptive and inference statistic was carried out with t Student test. Significance level is defined p < 0.05 with 95% confidence level and 5% accepted error.

RESULTS. During data analysis we obtained satisfactory results about proposed hypothesis, because we observed occupational therapy contributes positively in their recuperation, besides receptor patients obtained great benefits.

DISCUSSION. With this investigation we pretend to point out the importance to apply this therapy as part of the treatment, not only as an activity, but to demonstrate that abilities developed and learned help to adapt the patient in a psychosocial suitable environment again, considering occupational therapy fundamental role in relation with sensorium, motor, perception, cognitive and social skills, making evident its importance. Check-up symptom list and global activity evaluation scale supported to value clinical patient condition; however, we cannot determine exactly occupational therapy specific benefit, because treatment also includes psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy among others.
