TY - JOUR PY - 2011// TI - Juan Antonio Pagés (1825-1851): Notes for the biography of a Romantic poet (first part) JO - Boletin de la Real Academia Espanola A1 - Carolina, V.G. SP - 113 EP - 168 VL - IS - 303 N2 - Juan Antonio Pagés (Vilassar de Mar, 1825-BarceIona, 1851), son of farm workers, studied Philosophy and Law at the University of Barcelona, where he also worked in the Registrar for years as he combined his studies with literary creation, mainly Romantic poetry. He published his compositions in the literary journals of the period and even directed El trovador. Narciso Monturiol revealed him the Utopian socialism and the need for workers' education, which caused a change of direction in his poetry towards engagement. His work was published in instalments, after his suicide, by his friends and brother, his editor, who selected the texts. Thanks to his work we can now confirm that there was indeed a body of literature which was the fruit of revolutionary Romanticism in 1840s Barcelona.
