N2 - AIM: The purpose of this study examine the association between sleep quality and suicidality in major depressive patients.
METHOD: 124 patients with CCMD-2-R major depression were assessed with the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and the schedule for affective disorders and schizophrenia (SADS) suicide subscale as well as the Hamilton depression scale (HAMD).
RESULTS: Suicidal depressive patients had significantly higher scores of subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual sleep efficiency and PSQI global scores than nonsuicidal patients. Significant correlations were found between the SADS suicide subscale scores and the measures of PSQI.
CONCLUSION: An association exists between poor subjective sleep quality and suicidal behavior in patients with major depression. Serotonergic dysregulation may play a key role in underlying mechanisms of the association.
