N2  - Some epidemiologic characteristics of suicide in Dubrovnik area, based on police records for 12-year period, were investigated. The rate of suicide was analyzed according to age, sex, and method of suicide, as well as during pre-war (1988-1990) and war (1991-1993) periods, the latter being characterized by intensive was actions in the area, and first (1994-1996) and second (1997-1999) postwar periods. There were 156 suicides in total, 42 females and 79 males. The highest number of suicides was recorded in 1998 (suicidal rate 23.6), and lowest in 1989 (suicidal rate 4.3), indicating a postwar increment in the number of suicide. Men committed suicide more frequently than women, however, there was a greater proportion of women during the war 1993 and postwar year 1994. There was a predominance of the elderly (> 65 years), whereas during war period persons aged < 35 accounted for almost 50% of all suicides. In the second postwar period, middle aged (35-55) persons accounted for some 50% of suicides. The most frequent method of suicide was hanging (39.7%), followed by jumping from heights (19.0%), firearm (17.4%) and drowning (14.9%).<p /> <p>Language: hr</p>
