TY - JOUR PY - 2003// TI - Law and euthanasia JO - Douleurs A1 - Lelièvre, N. SP - 85 EP - 89 VL - 4 IS - 2 N2 - Euthanasia remains an unlawful act in France. Although recent events have incited much debate concerning the need for new legislation, the current position has not changed. A law of euthanasia would not be a satisfactory response to personal suffering. Improved access to palliative care, both qualitatively and quantitatively, is a more appropriate way of meeting the demands of human dignity in end-of-life situations. The Swiss legislation concerning "medically assisted suicide" also raises some very interesting questions. Switzerland has decided to use law to set more restrictive conditions without waiting for a situation to develop where physicians would be accused of writing death prescriptions.
