TY - JOUR PY - 2004// TI - Entrepreneurship development in networks of weaver cluster of Pochampalli JO - Journal of rural development A1 - Sharma, S. SP - 335 EP - 353 VL - 23 IS - 3 N2 - Pochamalli, in Andhra Pradesh is famous for hand woven tie and dye designs. After showing a steady growth for 55 years, the cluster went into a crisis in early 2002, when the weavers unable to compete in a free market lost their livelihood and started to commit suicide. The immediate interventions were to lift the excess stock, to give work to the weavers and provide immediate relief to stop suicides. To prevent suicides in the long term, the issues of low productivity of looms, uncertain employment of weavers and lack of coordination and joint action of weavers outside the cooperative fold were addressed. The main area of interest was enterprise development in the networks of weaver clusters of Pochampalli. This is the documentation of such interventions in the incipient handloom cluster of Pochampalli. It is also one of the few interventions in India to assist weavers outside the coopertive fold.
