TY - JOUR PY - 2002// TI - Meeting suicidal people - The ways out JO - Psychiatria Danubina A1 - Fartacek, R. A1 - Nindl, A. SP - 157 EP - 165 VL - 14 IS - 3-4 N2 - The basic principles of the work of Suicide-Prevention-Salzburg are summarized. Problems of communication with suicidal patients are discussed in view of the fact that there are several problems within the patient-doctor relationship. Different models of dynamics of suicide are described. With reference to a model developed by Edwin Shneidman we are pointing out that it is a good opportunity for the doctor-patient relationship to communicate not only via clinical assessment of suicide risk but also at a level independent from diagnosis. Shneidman summarized commonalities of suicide and gives us the opportunity to get closer to suicidal patients. Consequences for further education of medical doctors and other health professionals are shown. Since the beginning of 2002 in Salzburg a councelling center supports health professionals in their work with patients at risk for suicide, the website of Suicide-Prevention-Salzburg also is used as a ressource center.
