TY - JOUR PY - 1998// TI - Social psychiatry's approach to suicide JO - Tijdschrift voor Psychiatrie A1 - Sonneborn, C. A1 - Pieters, G. SP - 221 EP - 230 VL - 40 IS - 4 N2 - Psychiatrists are frequently faced with the problem of prediction and prevention of suicide. Recent relevant literature is reviewed, using a biopsychosocial model of suicide. Social factors which either precipitate or protect against suicide are given special attention. Using this 'social psychiatry approach' to suicide, a few tentative conclusions about intervention are drawn. Further research focusing on specific therapeutic strategies for suicidal patients is needed.
