N2 - OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to study the prognosis of affective disorders in different subtypes, Methods: 117 patients diagnosed as affective disorders were followed up at the eighth year after their discharge. They were divided into three groups of 25 unipolar depression, 66 bipolar non-mixed/rapid cycling affective disorder and 26 bipolar mixed/rapid cycling affective disorder.
RESULTS: The patients in bipolar mixed/rapid cycling group had significantly higher incidences of relapse, suicide and chronicity, and lower GAS score but higher SDSS total score compared with other two groups. The outcome assessment showed an poor outcome for patients with bipolar mixed/rapid cycling subtype, a moderate outcome for bipolar non- mixed/rapid subtype and an good outcome for unipolar one.
CONCLUSION: The results suggest that bipolar mixed/rapid cycling subtype may be one with unfavourable prognosis in affective disorder.
