The rising rate of suicide in men in England and Wales observed in the 1970s and '80s has reversed, and the suicide rate for both sexes is now decreasing, according to an analysis of suicide data from the Office for National Statistics (Br J Psychiatry 2000;176:64-7). Between 1990 and 1997, the suicide rate for males and females decreased in all age groups, and there were changes in the methods used. Rates of self poisoning with solids and liquids levelled off for men between these years, and rates fell by 22%for women. Poisoning by gases and vapours, including car exhaust fumes, fell by 61%in men and 60%in women. Suicides by hanging and strangulation increased in men. ...
