N2  - The basic philosophy from which stopping sight distance criteria are derived is reviewed. A comparison is made of driver actions required for the stopping manuever and the avoidance manuever. The use of requirements based upon the avoidance manuever is proposed as a basis for sight distance guidelines, considering level of service as a factor. The operational steps in the driving guidance and control process are presented. Use of human factors research regarding driver perception is made to derive values for a perception sight distance. Anticipatory sight distance is also defined, and recommended values presented. Finally, special conditions are identified which warrant additional guides to provide for large trucks.
