TY - JOUR PY - 1976// TI - Contribution to selection of railroad ballast JO - Transportation engineering journal of the American Society of Civil Engineers A1 - Gaskin, PN A1 - Raymond, GP SP - 377 EP - 394 VL - 102 IS - 2 N2 - Laboratory classification of 10 railroad ballasts used in a CNR field test is given. The 10 ballasts are rated for their field performance from the CNR test report. Each ballast is rated for field breakdown and for stability. These ratings are compared with the classification tests. Recommendations are made for the selection of ballasts from simple laboratory classification tests. It is shown that one test cannot predict breakdown for all field conditions since mechanical wear, chemical wear, and temperature changes, to mention the obvious, each affect the breakdown of ballast by different amounts. Similarly stability cannot be predicted by one classification test. Specification tests and limits are recommended.
