A1 - Legg, BB SP - 24 EP - 26 VL - 67 IS - 6 N2 - The use of total station surveying equipment (TSSE) by the Washington State Patrol in the greater Seattle area has proved successful in reducing accident investigation time and speeding incident clearance. Implemented by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), TSSE uses an infrared electronic distance meter combined with a rod-mounted prism to automatically measure the horizontal distance to an object; a theodolite to measure the horizontal angle to an object; and an internal level to measure vertical rise to an object. A nationwide survey showed that TSSE is being used in 10 states, while 13 states are planning to implement it. These states were motivated to use TSSE by the desire to improve public service.
