TY - JOUR PY - 2000// TI - Towards a North American Geometric Design Standard for Speed Humps JO - ITE journal A1 - Weber, PA A1 - Braaksma, John P. SP - 30 EP - 34 VL - 70 IS - 1 N2 - The most common design for speed humps is the Watts Profile or circular hump. Most vehicles can travel them safely at 25 to 30 kph. However, these speeds are considered unrealistically low for many streets in North America that could benefit from traffic calming. The Watts Profile and similar humps are also too abrupt for most heavy vehicles. To address this problem, efforts are underway to develop speed-hump geometric design standards for North America, where vehicle characteristics, environmental conditions and motorist expectations may be different from those in other countries.
