Through education and legislation, the state of Arizona has developed a multifaceted approach to decreasing its highest cause of accidental death in small children, backyard pool drownings. The epidemiologic information, available community resources, and programs developed are reviewed in this article. The response used in Arizona can be modified by other communities that are developing pool drowning or other childhood accident prevention programs.
