TY - JOUR PY - 2006// TI - The Deriner Arch Dam in Turkey and Its Seismic Stability Under the Maximum Credible Earthquake JO - Shuili Xuebao A1 - Wieland, M A1 - Malla, S A1 - Ruoss, R SP - 1516 EP - 1522 VL - 37 IS - 12 N2 - The 250 m high Deriner arch dam in Turkey, which is presently under construction on the Coruh River in north-eastern Turkey, is discussed. The foundation excavation was completed in 2005 and the concreting of the concrete blocks is in progress. It is expected that the dam made of conventional mass concrete will be completed in 2010. It will be the highest arch dam in Turkey. With a volume of about 3.3 million m(sup-scr)3, it will also be one of the largest arch dams in the world. Details about the seismic design of the dam are discussed. The safety evaluation earthquake with an average return period of 10000 years has a peak ground acceleration of 0.35 g. It is expected that cracks will form along horizontal lift joints in the central upper portion of the dam and that the grouted contraction joints provided with shear keys will open under this earthquake. Thus, concrete blocks might displace towards the reservoir in the top portion of the dam. The expected maximum displacement and rocking motion of such blocks are investigated.
