N2  - To improve the safety of cyclists, a number of cycle crossings at intersections were reconstructed. The recontructed crossing were elevated and coloured red-grey. Cyclists' safety was evaluated by accident analysis and observational studies such as speed measurements, behaviour studies, conflict studies, and interviews. The results of the observations show that the speed of cars has been reduced and that a higher number of cyclists are getting the right of way at rebuilt junctions. Contributing factors may be an unconscious interpretation of the reconstructed crossing by cyclists' that they have priority together with a lack of knowledge concerning the right of way regulations. The final conclusion is that the overall level of safety seems to be unchanged and is therefore unaffected by the different construction types. However, the reconstructed junctions seem to infer more self-confident cyclists and more defensive drivers.<p />
