Many of the factors in the school environment can be improved with careful planning and allocation of resources. The pediatrician, as a child advocate, is in an excellent position to influence the allocation of school resources to improve the educational outcome. This article summarizes some of the current understanding gathered from applying an environmental health approach to the school setting and provides a basis for the interested physician and other child advocate to learn more and get involved.
