Nearly 4% of children in the United States experience physical abuse by a caregiver and 21% witness family violence at least once in their lifetime.(1) The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends an indirect approach to identifying risk factors for child abuse: pediatricians should obtain a thorough social history and learn the family’s struggles and strengths, offer anticipatory guidance on the stressors involved with raising a child, and be alert to signs and symptoms of maltreatment and intimate partner violence. Key words: pediatric care, prevention, family violence, screening
