The development and validation of a simulation model of a pelican crossing JO - Traffic engineering and control A1 - Griffiths, JD A1 - Hunt, JG A1 - Marlow, M SP - 611 EP - 616 VL - 25 IS - 12 N2 - At a Pelican crossing, signals are used to control vehicular traffic to establish pedestrian precedence and to indicate the period during which precedence must continue to be given to pedestrians who are on the carriageway. The simulation model described in this paper applies to a single-stage freestanding Pelican crossing, and extends an earlier model by including vehicle actuation and two-way flow of pedestrians and vehicles. The realism of the model has been significantly improved by incorporating the main features of pedestrian and vehicle behavior at Pelican crossings.
