TY - JOUR PY - 1986// TI - Effect of darkness on the capacity of road junctions JO - Traffic engineering and control A1 - Burrow, IJ SP - 596 EP - 599 VL - 27 IS - 12 N2 - This article describes an investigation into the effect of darkness on the capacity of various types of road junction. The main objectives of the study were to establish whether capacities were significantly different in the dark, and to derive a method of allowing for any effect when using the established junction capacity models. The three most common types of junction have been studied: traffic signals, at-grade roundabouts and major/minor junctions. The evidence obtained suggests that the maximum flow through each type of junction is significantly reduced in darkness. However, no consistent link could be found between the level of street-lighting provided and the effect of darkness on the junction capacity.
